'Dougal's Unclaimed Money Register' is a valuable handbook, forming a complete register of property in Chancery. “It contains the Names of persons deceased whose Heirs-at-law, Next-of-Kin, or legal Personal Representatives have been advertised for; also of Persons wanted for something to their advantage, Legatees, Creditors or their Representatives, Missing Friends, Annuitants, &c., &c., &c., advertised in the London, Provincial, Irish, Scotch, and Foreign Newspapers.” The foreign newspapers referred to included Indian, American, Canadian, French, German, Swedish, Belgian, and Colonial papers.

The index and six appendixes mention circa 100,000 names. Many entries include a place of residence, some an occupation, and occasionally a year of death or other information. It is not too late to make a claim – however, proof of connection needs to be made.

"It also contains material on Missing relatives, Unclaimed Dividends, Dormant Funds in Chancery, Foreign Intestates, Estates reverting to the Crown, Lapsed Legacies, Misers, Claimants, Curiosities of Next-of-Kin, Army Prize Money, Extraordinary Windfalls, Amusing Anecdotes, Curious Wills, also numerous full Copies of Advertisements, with names and dates of papers in which they appeared".

Example entry:

ROBERT GREGORY BURGIS, of Worcester, England, who arrived at Sydney, New South Wales, from New Zealand, about the year 1854, and who left Sydney about twelve months subsequently, and who, if living, is entitled to a LEGACY of £1,000 under the will of his Aunt. If the said ROBERT GREGORY BURGIS is dead, his lawful widow, child, or children, or any person claiming through him, her, or them, are required to enter their claims to the said LEGACY at ... London.—New York Herald. [Specimen advertisement]
