The Historical Records of Australia Series III, published in 1921, covers despatches and papers relating to the settlement of the states. Volume 3 looks in particular at Tasmania January to December 1820.

The papers included are despatches to and from Lieut Governor Sorell, to and from the commandant at Port Dalrymple, miscellaneous papers relating to the administration of the government, evidence given before a commission of enquiry held by JT Bigge, and returns and exhibits relating to other inquiries.

The reproduction of the actual material gives an invaluable insight into the lives, frustrations, triumphs and failures of the settlers and settlements. A comprehensive index allows easy access to individual events.

I was very happy to learn that the Gang of runaway Convicts had been annihilated, and I consider the conduct of the party, who were sent out upon the application of the Chief District Constable, to have been highly proper and praiseworthy.
From the Evidence taken upon the Coroner's Inquest upon John Ayres, it is clear that he had a loaded Musket and that he presented it at the Soldier; and, considering the desperate conduct of this Gang altogether, I consider that Military execution could not have been better applied.
The character and condition of Woolley, who was wounded, is not known to me; but, if his conduct was such as to support the claim for consideration which his Wound gives to him, I shall be happy on your recommendation to accede to any proposition for rewarding him ...
Wm. Sorell.
