This 'Sands and Mac' directory for Melbourne and suburbs contains the names, addresses and occupations on thousands of residents in and around Melbourne in 1872.

  • Alphabetical directory (state-wide): an alphabetical list of residents together with their address, and usually includes occupation.
  • Trade and professional directory: like a current-day yellow pages, this has occupations arranged alphabetically, together with the the persons name, and address
  • The Miscellaneous section is also useful to, as it contains mini-directories of banking and insurance companies, societies and institutions, government MPs, consuls, clergy, councillors and judicial officers and more.

Users should always refer to the display advertisements as they often provide names and addresses.
