Are you aware that Police Gazettes are a unique, useful, fascinating resource, and they contain a goldmine of information for local, family and social historians? They were compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, and as such, contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

Listing not only changes in the Police Force itself (such as promotions, resignations, dismissals, retirements and deaths), you will also find information on the warrants issued, a listing of arrests and discharges (together with physical descriptions of the criminal), inquest verdict, lost/stolen/missing items (including stock and horses), escaped prisoners and also missing persons. You will also find a small number of entries from interstate Police Gazettes if it was thought the the person might be heading towards Queensland.

Example entries:
Felonies and Offences Not Otherwise Described - 7 February 1877
Stolen from a garden at Gympie, during the nights of the 7th and 9th instant, the property of David Groundwater, nine boxes containing bees and honey to the value of £5; boxes identifiable. Suspicion attaches to aboriginals camped in the neighbourhood. 29th January, 1877.

Highway Robbery and Stealing From the Person - 6 March 1878
Stolen from the person of H. McCauley, at Bowen, while under the influence of drink, on the verandah of Mrs. Long's house, on the night of the 11th instant, five £5 notes and one £1 note, supposed to be on the A.J.S. Bank, Nos. unknown, not identifiable. Suspicion, no warrant, attaches to Mrs. Long, of whom no description is given, but who is a resident of Bowen and well known to the local police. A doubtful case. 26th February, 1878.
