The whole 458 page directory, including most text in the advertisements, is searchable, useful not only for finding names, but also places, occupations and other information for family and local historians.

This directory is divided into four main sections: Streets (covering Hobart and Launceston), Country Towns, Alphabetical, and Trades and Professions. These four classifications enable the reader to see at a glance, the names of residents or traders in any one town; the address and occupation of any resident in the state; and, the number of persons throughout Tasmania, engaged in any one trade or calling.

The first two sections contain separate Street Directories of Hobart and Launceston and Alphabetical Directories for every other Town, Township and Postal District in Tasmania. No matter how large or small the town it will be listed – even Alberton, population 73; English Town, 42; Hythe (Kent Co), 170; Warrentinna, 79; and towns with floating populations of miners such as Magnet and Renison Bell are listed.

Example entry:
LOTTAH, Dorset Co. 102¾ m E fr Laun, rl
Herrick th 18 m mtr (Floating pop of miners)
Beechey Algy, tin dresser
Beechey H, frmr & miner
Breadmore Wm. miner
Cox Geo. miner
Gough Hy, miner

The Alphabetical section contains the names for the entire state, arranged under a single alphabet.

The Trades Section shows the business men and firms of the state, arranged under their individual trade or profession – fuel dealers, metal buyers, monumental masons, pastrycooks, teachers of elocution, and many more. This section also contains the list of Justices of the Peace.

Separate directories are given in the following areas, making the work comprehensive: Ecclesiastical; Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural; Local and General Government.

The directory includes many pages of advertisements - all useful information, often including names of people and places. The whole 458 page directory, including most text in the advertisements, is searchable, useful not only for finding names, but also places occupations and other information for family and local historians.
