Excerpt:
ON first.November, 1897, the Railways of the Southern Division
of the Colony reached the town of Gladstone, at Port Curtis,
one of the Finest Natural Harbours in Australia,
thus giving passengers to and from North Queensland direct
Railway communication with the Metropolis of the Colony, also
with Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Between Gladstone and Broadmount, on the
Fitzroy River, the Government steamer " Premier " plies daily,
giving a short passage of four and a-half hours via "The Narrows,"
protected from Ocean Storms all the way.
Between Rockhampton and North Queensland
numerous first-class sea-going steamers such as the Aramac,
Arawatta, \Vodonga, Peregrine, etc., run twice a week. The
journey from Rockhampton northwards to Cape Vork for a distance
of 8oo miles is wholly within the Barrier Reef, which insures a
delightfully smooth-water passage, and includes some of the
Finest Scenery in Australasia.
The climate of North Queensland during the winter monthscool
and bracing, but not too cold-is unsurpassed in any part of
the world, and the tropical scenery, including the Barron Falls,
and Whitsunday and Hinchinbrook Passages,
once seen will become a pleasant reflection in after years.
